Swindon Railway Works was a main workshop that the Great Western Railway (UK) use for building and repairing locomotives and other stock.

HistoryEdit

Firstly in 1841 a repair shed was built but it only employed 200 men, work began in 1843 with the locomotive 'Premier' renamed 'Great Western' then six Iron Duke class locomotives along with many wagons. In 1892 all wagons, carriges and locos were for conversion to Standard gauge and by the turn f the century 3/4 of Swindons workers were working at the works. Many of the bigger locomotives where built at this time. The Works continued to build locomotives until 1965 when it built the British Railways Class 14 only repair sheds remained but the works closed in 1986.
