The Great Western Railway was one of the 'Big Four' Railway companies in Britain. It linked together London with the south-west, west of England and most of Wales.

History[]

Founded in 1833, the first trains ran in 1838 when the chief engineer was Isambard Kingdom Brunel who chose broad gauge as standard for the Great Western Railway. The last broad-gauge services were operated in 1892. The GWR was the only company to keep its identity through the Railway Act 1921. The GWR picked up some nicknames "God's Wonderful Railway" (also as "God's Worst Railway" by some LNER supporters!!!) and by others the "Great Way Round" but it was famed as the "Holiday Line". Eventualy in 1947 it was nationalised and became British Railways.
